A Brief History

Wilhelm Lutz was born sometime around 1824 (could be 1834 instead) in Gros Spiegelburg, Prussia (Germany). He lived in Germany nearly all of his life. He got married there and all of his children were born there. Wilhelm came to the U.S. from Germany on March 4, 1891. He died nine 9 days after arriving here and is buried in the Lutheran cemetary at Stockholm township in Iowa. He was 67 years old. His wife, Charlotte, had died in Germany when the children were quite young. Wilhelm and Charlotte had 8 children - 4 boys and 4 girls. One of their boys was Karl William Lutz.

Karl was born in Germany on May 8, 1860. He came to the U.S. in 1885. He married Marie Lutz on October 19, 1889 in Denison Iowa. Marie was also a Lutz, but there is no known relation between the two families. Marie and her sister had come to America in 1886, when Marie was 14 and her sister Elizabeth was 10. They settled in Odeboldt Iowa with their aunt (their mother's older sister) and uncle. Their parents, Heinrich Lutz and Margaretha Geir, had both died earlier in Germany.

Karl and Marie had 1 girl and 5 boys. One of their boys was Edward Carl Lutz.

Edward was born on August 9, 1896 in Odebolt Iowa. He married Esther Hantelmann. They had 1 girl and 2 boys. Esther died very young. Edward had a brother named Henry who was a minister. He was married to Ida Franzman. They had 1 daughter. Henry also died very young. Edward and Ida then married and had 4 boys and 1 girl. So they had 9 children between them.

Ida's parents had come from Lemburg, Austria. They were John Franzman (born in 1866) and Katrina Schick (born in 1867).

The oldest of the 5 children Edward and Ida had together was Theodore John Harry Lutz.

Theodore (he is known as John to everyone) was born on July 18, 1930 in Denison Iowa. He married Mary Elizabeth Marek on May 4, 1953. Mary was born in Elk River Minnesota on May 24, 1932. They had 5 boys. The oldest one was me, John Lawrence Lutz.
