Note for Carl William Lutz
Carl William Lutz was born in Spiegelburg, Prussia (now East Germany), in the province of Brandenburg. He was the second son of William and Charlotte Koller Lutz. His mother died when he was about 15. When he was about 16, he worked as a valet in a hotel at Passawaldt. He did this until he was 25 years old. The government was about to draft him into the army. Since he was so short, he knew he would have to be a foot soldier. Not liking that option, he obtained papers to come to the United States. He went to Denison, Iowa, where some relatives and friends had already settled. He worked for Taylor Nixon for two years and then, with a friend and his wife, rented a farm near Kiron, Iowa.

It was sometime after this that he was introduced to Marie Lutz by the people she was staying with, who happened to be friends of his.

Carl was very strict with the children. They were told something but once, the second time came the strap. He loved to sing, and in the winter he would cut corn cob dollars for the children to play with.

After Marie died on March 30, 1901, he married a widow named Maria Stang on April 1, 1902. She had 5 children from a previous marriage.

In 1906, they moved to Goodrich township and returned to Denison in 1917. Maria passed away in 1942. Carl then lived for four years with son Harry, at Ida Grove. The last two years of his life he lived at the Carsten Hollander home in Denison. He became ill the week of Oct. 18 and passed away the following week, on October 28, at 10:30 PM. At the time, he had 22 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren.

Services were held at Zion Lutheran church in Denison and interment was in the cemetery northeast of Odebolt.
