The History of the Lutz Name
I don't have a lot on this yet. It seems, however, that Lutz's came from Germany, Switzerland and Poland. According to The 'Deutsches Geschlechterhandbuch' (index of family names and their roots in all the German speaking world), The Lutz family name is a derivate of the (in Germany still common) first name Lutz, earlier Luzo, Luid or Lud, short forms of the surname Luwdig. Years later, it changed to Ludz and then later to Lutz. According to Dr. Alfred Hans Kuby of Edenkoben, Germany the "LUTZ" name is a derivative of "LUDWIG". The name Lutz has been seen as a nickname for someone with the given name Ludwig. Lutz is a short form of the old German first name "Ludwig". According to "Dictionary of German Names" it came from the ancient German name "Hlod-wig" meaning "He who loves glory and fight". Also, both Ludwig and Lutz were, and still are, common first names. |
